#DesignYourChristmas - Season 3… Episode 4. The Knighthood of Wood

We close the third season of #DesignYourChristmas Series with one of the most common, long-lasting friend of the humankind and its habitat… Wood.

Lattice Chair

Kuan design studio (founded by Chen Kuan-Cheng) is a Taiwan design company, mainly engaged in product design, furniture design, especially specialising in the use of Taiwan's high-quality bamboo, through the bending and unique weaving techniques combined with bent wood, to create a new design language, to show the value of Taiwan's craftsmanship, and through mass production so that products can be brought into the lives of ordinary people.

The word “lattice” means lines intertwined with, and intersecting, each other horizontally and vertically. It also symbolises the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures. Especially using Taiwan's high-quality bamboo with excellent toughness, combines bamboo craft into woodcraft via weaving bamboos and bent woods together. By preserving and integrating the flexibility of bamboos and the firmness of wood, the weight of the chair is only 4 kg, but it can withstand more than 120 kg of weight.

Single-sided armrest design allows users to sit in a variety of ways, more free and flexible. Bending wood can also be cut in different ways and turned into double armchairs or series of other furniture. Lattice Chair has been awarded the Platinum A Design Award in Furniture Design Category 2021. Material: Maple, bamboos, bent wood (Formosan Michelia, beech). Finishing: Natural wood wax oil

Size: L54 x W60 x H 76 mm

Price: USD Approx. 1,000* (to be confirmed by the designer)

The Sayari Collection - The Maoni Daybed & Kimono Side Table

Studio Lloyd is a design studio based in Cape Town, South Africa. Founded in 2016 by Ashlee Lloyd, it creates design crafted by hand for the residential, commercial and hospitality industry. Each creation is a culmination of functionality and true individuality. The Sayari Outdoor Collection is inspired by the beauty of the African continent. The return of sculptural and curved seating - outdoors. Instead of using traditional shapes and patterns. “Sayari” is Swahili and translates to “Planet”. The focus of the collection lies on being gentle and conscious of our ‘Sayari’ and creating products made of the Eucalyptus Globulus alien species which has a negative impact on the biodiversity of South Africa. The collection consists of a reflective and thought-through environment made to last.

The simplistic yet eye-catching Maoni Daybed is versatile in its use and offers pairing with the uniquely shaped but functional Kimondo Side Table with marble inlay. The magic that happens when textures and creative forces collide.

“Maoni” means “Comet” which reflects in the design of the daybed. The beautifully crafted organic-shaped daybed is made of Eucalyptus Globulus bio-sourced hardwood. The daybed features a variety of curves incorporating an ultra-comfortable firm mattress and headrest that is supportive of your neck and upholstered in a soft high-quality outdoor woven fabric.

“Kimondo” is Swahili meaning “Meteor” which is a rock or metal body in outer space with the ability of entering the earth’s atmosphere. The side table fits perfectly into the larger circular curve of the daybed and is the ideal joint surface to keep personal belongings or refreshing drinks safe yet in reach. Likewise to Maoni, the table is made of the alien species Eucalyptus Globulus with an added alluring inlay of natural stone. The side table is optional yet recommended in order to tie the design of the Sayari outdoor environment together.

Headrest

Christopher Kurtz’s pieces are born, first and foremost, from a sculptural motivation invested in the specificity of objecthood. He expertly sculpts his material using a carefully chosen palette of tools; often beginning without a predetermined blueprint for the final piece, Christopher works intuitively to create poignant and poetic forms that respond to a personal narrative or reflection and which, in turn, elicit a powerful emotional response from the viewer. He has gained international attention for his sculpture and studio furniture, which is included in significant private collections. The artist was shortlisted for the Loewe Craft Prize 2018 with a signature wooden sculptural work. He received the prestigious Louis Comfort Tiffany Award in 2005, and in 2007 he received a New York Foundation for the Arts Award (Lily Auchincloss fellow).

Headrest (2020) is a limited edition of five made out of lime tree.

Fereday Ottoman

Tom Fereday develops unique designs originating from an intrinsic inquiry into the role of objects today. Built on the principle of honest design Tom’s work celebrates the materials and manufacture behind furniture and objects, guiding considered and thoughtful design outcomes that explore the notion of quiet innovation.

Born in Australia, Tom grew up in London, studying sculpture and graphic design at the Wimbledon School of Art before moving to Australia to complete an honours in Industrial Design at the University of Technology Sydney. He launched his studio in 2013. Works have been presented and published internationally through collaborations with brands including Louis Vuitton, Alessi, Stellarworks and Herman Miller and exhibited through galleries including Museum of Contemporary Art, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Powerhouse Museum, Mint Gallery, Australian Design Centre and frequent international furniture fairs.

Initially created for the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the ottoman seating collection (35 pieces) is the result of collaboration with the cultural institution for two years, now used in the iconic Sydney gallery. The Fereday ottoman (as named by the gallery) is a true celebration of Australian artisanship through both locally sourced materials and craftsmen with the final collection made entirely in Sydney. Built upon a refined soft angular solid timber frame made from Australian spotted gum and finished with a slender proportioned, fine aniline leather seat each element was handcrafted by some of the finest makers in Australia. The seats are now available for sale (lead time 6-8 weeks, 10 leather variations available).
