Design Your Christmas 2022 - Episode 1
#DesignYourChristmas - Season 3… Episode 1. Let There Be Light… A first round of my random and personal selection of design creations for your Christmas list.
Elio Lamp (small - midi - tall)
Founded in 2019 by Indian designers Utharaa L Zacharias and Palaash Chaudhary, soft-geometry is a collaborative design studio creating collectible objects around a central theme of softness. Their work intersects texture, transparency and colour, with slow hand-worked techniques, imperfection and intricate craft. Zacharias and Chaudhary often reference these ideas from the rich visual culture and hand-crafts of their home towns in India, and derive opportunities to bridge traditional and modern ways of making and seeing.
Inspired by an informal photo series documenting the play of light on glass, water, skin, and dust, Elio lamps are stacks of translucent, tubular, cast resin that mimic interactions of natural light on uneven transparencies. The lamps look to recreate a diffused glow using frosted sugar jellies as a visual reference and Its singular bend is a small ode to Eileen Grey’s Bibendum lounge. The Elio Lamp series offers three sizes (small, midi, tall). Voice-controlled smart lamp, hand-cast in textured resin.

Gravity Well Chandelier
Richard Clarkson Studio is a New York / New Zealand based art and design laboratory. It is a small but very capable team with backgrounds in art, design, science, engineering, and business. The studio creates objects, products and installations that are, minimal in style, honest in material, elegant in simplicity and sculptural to the core. Distorting the ever-blurring lines between art & design, it uses processes and methodologies drawn from both disciplines.
Gravity Well Chandelier is a hand blown glass and formed acrylic light feature inspired by visualisation models of the gravitational effects by celestial bodies in space. Limited Edition of 20 pieces available in clear glass, clear & frosted combination and all frosted glass.

Adaman
Sébastien Léon is a French Los Angeles-based artist and designer who has worked internationally for both galleries and brands such as Audemars Piguet, Krug, Audi, and Samsung. He has shown his sculptures at the Palais de Tokyo (Paris), the Park Avenue Armory (New York), the New Museum (New York), the Palazzo della Triennale (Milan), and UCCA (Beijing). His furniture, typically relying on tubular metallic structures, is strongly influenced by his immediate environment. His decade in New York translates into a collection inspired by the world of construction sites, and his move to California morphs into designs drawn from insects and rock formations.
Andaman is a unique piece in an edition of seven, featuring assembled blue glass cubes with a lighting element. Named after the seas, Hydrochrom is a series of sculptural glassworks hand-blown in Los Angeles, an ode to the ocean.

Empyrean Suspended 01
Laurids Gallée is an Austrian designer based in Rotterdam. From early childhood he was exposed to creative practices, and after briefly studying anthropology, he graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2015. He spent the following years learning different manufacturing techniques, as a craftsman in art and design production. In 2017 he started his own studio in Rotterdam; his work explores how traditional and folkloric elements enter modern materiality, always considering today’s advanced manufacturing processes to create a contemporary fusion.
In ancient cosmologies, the Empyrean was believed to be a celestial place in the highest of heavens, occupied by the element of fire. The warm glow of the ceiling light Empyrean suspended 01 pays homage to this antiquated concept, as Gallée experiments with light through material hues, transparency, and luminosity. Gallée observed the warped behavior of light around black holes and translated it into the refraction of light in the Empyrean light. 24m of LED-light strips illuminate the dark resin centerpieces from within, while the rounded edges contort the light rays, creating a floating effect that moves around the geometric composition. The thickness of the resin blocks with the intangible translucence of the light creates a compelling juxtaposition that constitutes a balanced yet playful aesthetic that teases the eye.
Empyrean suspended 01 is the first light in the Empyrean collection. As Gallée experiments with the light bending qualities of translucent resin, the Empyrean collection will grow and continue to catch the light.
