Rand, Sin, Ishtar And Shamash
Rand Abdul Jabbar unveils a collection inspired by three major deities within Babylonian mythology: Sin, Ishtar and Shamash.
Rand Abdul Jabbar, the UAE-based architect and designer worked about the symbolism of the three deities. Together, they represent the heavens, earth and water and symbolise the three great forces of nature: the sun, the moon and the morning star.
Sin is the Mesopotamian moon god, often symbolised by the crescent moon. The moon played a key role in Mesopotamian religious culture. As it moved through its phases, people learned to keep their calendars based on the lunar cycle His chief attribute was wisdom, which he dispensed not only to humans through his priests, but also to the gods themselves who came to consult him every month. Rand used white Carrara marble for her collection.
Ishtar is the goddess of both fertility and war and is the most prominent female deity in the late Babylonian pantheon. She was the divine personification of the planet Venus. Besides the lions on her gate, her primary symbol is an eight-pointed star. The designer chose resin for her creation.
Shamash is the Mesopotamian god of sun, truth, justice and healing. A powerful solar deity, he is often pictured with a disk that symbolized the Sun. Shamash, who is the brother of the goddess Ishtar, exercised the power of light over darkness and evil. Here the piece is in nero marquina marble.
