A Winning Sunny Apartment

INSIDE World Festival of Interiors has announced the best interior designs for 2018. For the Residential category, the award goes to the Sunny Apartment in Taiwan.

The recognition for the INSIDE World Festival of Interiors goes to the best projects across the categories of Civic, Culture & Transport, Creative re-use, Residential, Display, Hotels and Bar & Restaurant.

The Sunny Apartment is located in Taichung, one of the typical units of Taiwanese housing. The Very Studio and Che Wang Architects transformed the space original plan. Following a few guiding principles, they were able to give a completely new feeling to the 200 square metres, now a modern open space.

Once they got rid of the useless walls, they added new ones following a pentagonal pattern, like the petals of a flower. This layout makes the open space particularly bright and airy. The interior decorations are wavy and minimal, recalling the walls. Colours, light and neutral, make this house a peaceful haven.

The flowing space is a new space order of Pentagon was placed into the plan. Then the fluidity and dynamicity of shared space are caused naturally. Oblique walls delimiting the space simultaneously create an extension of the sight and circulation, and the sunshine on it to form the trace of time.

The opening of North, West and the South sides are released, not only the sunlight is introduced in addition the air flow into the shared space naturally. The quality of space and the comfortability of life are enhanced with the breeze.

The dome-shaped ceiling are placed in each space to capture the “sound of life” while the curved lighting from the gap creates some depth. In such all white spaces, I also wonder if there is either life allowed (to keep the space spotless) bringing colours and mess from time to time.
