#Salone - Port Light by Tom Fereday

At Salone del Mobile 2022, Australian designer Tom Fereday unveils ‘Port Light’, a new light series made out of cast crystal glass. Handmade in Australia in collaboration with Rakumba Lighting.

The Port light is an exploration of the refractive properties of cast crystal glass in the form of a unique reversible table and wall light collection. Intricately cast from solid crystal glass and housed in a brass base, the Port light may be reversed simply by flipping the glass body providing two varied moods and light interactions.

Through exploration into the refractive nature of glass the solid glass form obscures all evidence of the light source resulting in an abstract sculptural glowing form. Each piece is made from solid machined brass and raw cast glass celebrating the natural patina and finish of these two materials. Through a modular base the Port light was developed to accommodate a minimal table light and wall light option.

Handmade in Australia the port light was developed by Sydney based designer Tom Fereday in collaboration with Australian lighting brand Rakumba lighting.

Unveiling at Milan Design Week 2022

With borders finally opening for Australian citizens, I am pleased to Australian design presented at Milan Design Week this year.

I have been following Tom for a while (see below) and I like his fascination between the tension that lies between natural materials and contemporary design and manufacture.

His capability to create both industrial but also limited edition design is a great skill. And he is using one of my favourite principles: ‘honest design’, celebrating the materials and manufacture behind his creations.

Don’t miss visiting him at Salone, SIAM via Santa Marta 18 , 20123 Milan / 5Vie
