Merging Metal by Marcin Rusak

London-based Marcin Rusak is launching M R M (Marcin Rusak Manufacture), a new venture bringing artistic expression to the industrial processes around objects made with metal.

Started with the goal to bring a level of emotional expressionism into the furniture landscape, as found in abstract paintings, Marcin Rusak is presenting objects painted with bronze, brass, copper, aluminium and other metals as if they were three-dimensional canvases. They homogenise the complexity of abstract painting with simplicity of minimalist sculpture. They can either seamlessly integrate with their surroundings, or stand out, enhancing the space with their deep colours and rich tactile textures.

The furniture collection spans from understated pieces to statement sculptural works, capturing the expressive essence of working with liquified metals.

The designer wanted to have a project which would be more affordable and reaching a broader audience.

To achieve this, Marcin literally liquefied metal for a second and painted it. It comes as a wire of bronze / brass / zinc / copper / aluminium and is applied with 4,000 degrees in order to melt and be “sprayable”.

With this method we can create very painterly surfaces were created and metals were fusing into each other creating quite unique visual effects.

MRM wants to become a platform allowing other designers with strong interests in materials and new manufacturing processes to create their own series of furniture and objects, based on our technology. Each series will aim to bring the designers unique artistic expression to furniture we want to live with.

Marcin Rusak focuses on adopting various processes and inventing materials. Since setting up in 2015, the studio has worked towards finding new outlets for creative investigations. The Flora collection was initially developed from living flowers cast in resin, injected with samples of bacteria, in order to achieve ageing materials. The Perishable Series started as a way to find an alternative material to disposable electronics we no longer care for. The latest project named Tamed, involves metallising natural leaves using a thermo coating application, and is further exploring processes of preservation and questions the impermanence of natural things.
