معرض وحدة وشتات - Unit & Diaspora by Naqsh Collective

The Jordanian duo Naqsh Collective is back with an unusual installation highlighting the detailed beauty of Palestinian embroidery in sundials. When the sun narrates a journey in diaspora.

Nisreen and Nermeen Abudail of Naqsh Collective strike back with a strong and powerful set up right outside Amman (Jordan). In an open field, “close enough to where it all began” the sisters have integrated the sunlight to illustrate the Palestinian diaspora.

Unit and Diaspora” (Wihdeh Wa Shatat in Arabic) embedded the cross-stitch in 180 uniquely designed sun dials scattered in an open field to reflect the concentration of the Palestinian diaspora in different parts of the world.

The dial itself is made of fragile lime stone that gets chipped when it moves around, much the same way as what happens when one moves away from their land, the brass gnomon which is uniquely designed taking into consideration the right angle of the country that belongs to it, reflects the unwavering strength of the Palestinian identity having a unique design of one unit of Palestinian embroidery pattern engraved in it,  and the set up in an open field symbolises the strong connection between the Palestinian people and the land.

The added bonus when visiting the site, is seeing the generosity of Nisreen and Nermeen’s neighbours in Balqaa who are on hand offering coffee and figs and who have been camping on the land every night to protect the exhibit.
