From Palm Leaves to Metal Plating - AlAreesh العريش by Aljoud Lootah
On the occasion of Dubai Design Week 2017, Aljoud Lootah, one of the leading designers in the UAE, has launched the AlAreesh Collection.
The set of furniture and lighting is inspired by traditional AlAreesh walls. They were constructed from dried plain fonds of palm leaves, placed vertically as poles.
These structures were commonly used in the UAE as summer houses and majlises as the gaps in the walls allowed ventilation within the structures.
Aljoud collaborated with Probas Plating, a German electroplating company with over 50 years of experience.
I met Aljoud Lootah in 2012 before she decided to become a full-time multidisciplinary designer. She is from and based in Dubai, with a graphic design background. She is passionate about research and details before starting any project, and she likes to experiment and work with various materials and techniques.
She is also the first Emirati designer whose creations were acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia.
