A kite surfer retreat


Just three hours north of Toronto, AKB Architects designed a secluded kite surfer's retreat on Whistling Wind Island, nestled in the rugged beauty of Pointe Au Baril.


Pointe Au Baril, known for its dramatic Precambrian rock formations and challenging waterways, is a haven for those who appreciate its wild, untouched landscape. Whistling Wind Island, one of the most remote and wind-swept in the area, offers the perfect conditions for kite surfing.

The retreat by AKB Architects features a cluster of four cedar-clad buildings, designed to blend seamlessly with the island's rocky terrain. The main cottage, along with a bunkie, sauna, and boat storage, are linked by wooden walkways that follow the island’s natural contours, offering panoramic views from every angle.

Triple-pane glass walls and recessed windows ensure the structures are both energy-efficient and in harmony with the environment, while deep overhangs provide shade and minimise solar heat.

Inside, the main cottage includes a spacious open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area, anchored by a grand Muskoka granite fireplace. Whitewashed cedar walls and ceilings create a cozy yet contemporary feel, mirroring the natural surroundings. The smaller bunkie mirrors this design, offering additional accommodation with a similar warm, wood-lined aesthetic.

Built with sustainability in mind, the retreat uses minimal water and relies on wood-burning fireplaces as the sole heat source, eliminating the need for mechanical systems. The buildings are designed to withstand the harsh winter conditions, with protective features like roll-down aluminum doors and removable docks.

This retreat is more than just a summer getaway—it's a thoughtfully designed, nature-immersed sanctuary for those who value the raw beauty of Pointe Au Baril and the thrill of kite surfing in one of Canada’s most striking landscapes.
