Design Your Christmas 2020 - Episode 2

Celebrating the first Advent, the tradition sees the first of four candles to be lit on the family table… Here’s the reason why this week’s selection is focused on table accessories and objects.

Vestalia Candelabrum by LatoxLato (Italy)

The unique design, exquisite craftsmanship, and high-quality materials of this elegant candelabrum are the distinctive elements of this sumptuous sculptural piece. The rigorous silhouette comprises differently sized elements in a staggered arrangement to create a refined sense of movement. Handmade entirely of luxurious Carrara marble cut using a waterjet technique and enriched with brass elements for a sophisticated effect, this piece will be an eye-catching addition to an entryway, living room, or dining room.

Architects Virginia Valentini and Francesco Breganze de Capnist founded LATOxLATO design workshop in 2018.

Dimensions (cm): W 26 x D 3 x H 21

Prices: White Marble: USD 2,500*; Verde Imperiale marble: USD 2,800*; Grigio Carnico black (with chrome): USD 2,500*

 SAL⊥ by BOIR (Croatia)

SAL⊥ is a salt container that lets you witness and experience the precious moment of salt harvesting. It exhibits unique crystal patterns and allows you to harvest your salt in the most authentic way, applying the T-shaped tool reminiscent of those used by traditional sea salt harvesters.

Pour in a thin layer of bottled brine Nin 28 Bé that comes with the container, expose it to sunlight for an hour or heat it up in the oven. When the crystal pattern appears, it's ready to be served and harvested with a special metal T-shaped tool.

BOIR studio was founded in 2018 by Vlatka Leskovar - Zidar, a product designer, and Ivan Zidar, a graphic designer turned chef.

Materials: natural walnut case, ceramic vessel, hand-polished inox T-shaped tool packaged in a hard paper sleeve, with a product description leaflet
Dimensions: 163 x 103 x 26 mm - Weight: 380 g

Prices: SAL⊥ Natural: walnut & Dark: Black oil oak EUR 115* (ca. USD 135); Nin 28 Bé° / set of 4 bottles (100 ml): EUR 40 (ca. USD 48) concentrated sea water.

Inku Glassware by Sergio Herman for Serax (Belgium)

It was the Japanese sense of sophistication and imperfect perfection that 3-star Michelin chef Sergio Herman was able to infuse into the brand new Inku collection for Serax. The fine glassware series includes wine glasses through champagne glasses to water and cocktail glasses. A few of them are a special edition in ribbed glass, with tender folds as the ribs of a whale gradually fade to the edge of the glass.

The Inku collection started with tableware with clear references to shell shapes, blossoms and the abstract structures of nature. The items are use in Sergio Herman’s new Le Pristine brasserie in Antwerp.

Prices: from EUR 16.50* (ca. USD 19.75) for a Tumbler 25cl; EUR 21* (ca USD 25) for a Longdrink 45cl; EUR 22* (ca USD 26.4) for Champagne Coupe 15cl up to EUR 25* (ca USD 30) for the Red Wine Glass 70cl.

Tea Pavilion and Celebration Set by Shang Xia (China)

The Shang Xia, established jointly by the world famous designer Jiang Qiong Er and France's Hermès Group, celebrates a contemporary fine living lifestyle. I picked up two items from the Autumn-Winter 2020 collection:

  • Tea Pavilion: this major piece of the Da Tian Di collection, honours the bamboo marquetry, characteristic of ancestral Chinese know-how. The passion and patience of the master craftsman in the creation of this piece, highlights the meeting of tradition and Chinese excellence, symbol of the Shang Xia house.

  • Celebration: set in porcelain and woven bamboo, is inspired by the Song dynasty. Jingdezhen porcelain, renowned for its ancestral quality and the bamboo weaving made in the Sichuan region, reflects the ambition of Maison Shang Xia to offer ancestral know-how under a contemporary spirit.

Prices: Tea Pavilion EUR 9,700* (ca. USD 11,600); Celebration: EUR 680* (ca. USD 814)
